This is especially so in corporate environments. And inthe special case of RMIM, I know that many people access the group throughRTM and thus have to read it on their email. In the past I have skipped theposts which have made use of devanagari script since the my mail client couldnot display the devanagari fonts.The second issue is that there are a lot of people who simply don't know thedevanagari script. To them you can say tough luck!, or make sure that youcater to them as well. And what if someone wants to post lyrics of, say, aTamil song, would "you" have that person post it in the Tamil script (andhave you install a new font)? I think ITRANS has the flexibility to deal with alternative mappings. Iam only criticizing the commonly used conventions. Perhaps other needs in some other languages.AFAIK, there is a difference between the two. ISCII is a character encodingscheme defined by CDAC using ASCII as the base. It defines the actual codesto be used to represent the characters. ITRANS is a transliteration schemewhich defines a system to represent the Indian alphabet using the Romanalphabet. There needs to be software to interpret ITRANS to properly displaythe desired output format. Using ISCII one could have numerous fonts, and onewould be able to alter the look and feel just by switching the fonts just aswe do for Roman fonts. The trouble here is that currently the font designersdo not follow and standard. If I have misunderstood Mahesh I would welcome anyclarification. Many fonts that I have seenonly work on Microsoft OS's.I too like the transliteration scheme used by baraha, if only because it ismuch more intuitive. The problem (or convenience) with ITRANS is that it usesa simple system, one instance of a vowel for the hrasva and two instances forthe deergha. In most cases, it works. But becomes counterintuitive when usedfor non-Hindi vowels like deergha e and o. Therefore to avoid the ambiguityit is only right that we follow the convention in ITRANS. The other alternativeis to use the other convention of using lower case for the short vowel and the
